Preliminary Report on Turtle Nesting in the Province of Zambales for the Year 2005-2006

This is a preliminary report of the initial results derived from the Zambales Turtle Conservation Program in the province of Zambales.

In its third year of operation the Zambales turtle Conservation Program has achieved a high rate of hatchling success and a fairly wide distribution of activity throughout the province of Zambales.  ZTCP’s primary hatchery operations within the province are located in San Antonio, Zambales and at Rama Beach Resort in South Botolan. To date we have collected a total of 3,706 eggs with 1,621 hatchlings released and over 15 olive ridley, green and hawksbill turtles tagged throughout the province.  The Zambales experience has lead us to believe that the most effective way in managing and conducting hatchery operations is to provide rewards for the delivery of collected eggs.  This conservation method, although highly controversial, provides a platform for greater community involvement and activity.

At this point our numbers do not accurately reflect the corresponding hatchling rate success percentages as their have been two in situ nest clutch thefts as well as two or three nest clutch thefts out of our turtle hatchery operations.  Additionally there have been numerous experimental nest clutches that we originally felt that did not have optimum chances for survival due to factors such as clutches found exposed at the water line and others where the egg handling have been labeled as suspect before insertion into our hatcheries.  This data is still being collated and compiled at this time and will be the subject of a final report by the end of march or first week of april at the anticipated conclusion at our activities for the years 2005-2006.

From our seminar held on October 27 and 28, 2005 to this date February 22, 2006 we have experienced wide spread cooperation from our partners, DENR and Provincial Government of Zambales and the provincial government has provided PHP 50,000.00 in financial assistance to our hatchery operation in Zambales and DENR has been most cooperative in providing staff and support for our efforts in Zambales.

As stated earlier in the season we have been constructing a website dedicated specifically towards our turtle conservation efforts in Zambales, the features contained within will brings benefits to marine turtle conservation nationwide with the addition of online reporting facilities, downloadable PDF turtle data forms and a variety of tutorials including Marine Turtle Biology and Conservation (a DENR publication), Turtle Conservation Guidelines and Philippine Environmental Laws, all of these components will be downloadable on PDF for use in marine turtle conservation efforts throughout the Philippines.  We expect to have this website fully operational by March 15, 2006.

The 2006 San Antonio Town Fiesta Parade

On April 30th 2006 EPAFI was a proud participant on the annual San Antonio Town Fiesta Parade.  With a little help from the folks at Ocean Adventure we were able to put on a really good show!  On the float were our two Zambales Turtle Conservation Program poster girls, Jessica, Isabel and Kim and two of the famed Ocean Adventure mascots, the sea lion and the dolphin and a jolly good time was had by all has evidenced by the photos below.
